Paris Day 3: Aug. 24, 2008 - Shane's Birthday

Unfortunately, we woke up to a rainy day today on Shane's birthday. We had planned to go to Disneyland Paris but decided to post-pone it for better weather and hopefully less crowds. But, after getting a late start, we went to the oldest zoo in Paris, the menagerie, and the Natural History Museum in the Jardin des Plantes. It was a misty sort of rain -- very European. We had umbrellas and rain gear, so we were all set. It was really a nice change to be out in the rain since it wasn't that cold. Afterward, we tried to find a cool cafe in the area but it was quite residential. And it seemed that most of the folks that lived here were on vacation because it was a ghost town; however, it could have been because it was Sunday too so they were probably all at mass. We took the subway back to Carrefour L'Odean and tried to have a late lunch/early dinner at the very authentic cafe next to our apartment building. We had been intrigued because, each day, local Parisians line up - in the most unorderly fashion of course - to pounce on an open table -- especially outside on the sidewalk. When we arrived, it was virtually empty so we took a table inside looking out the French doors onto our busy little street. It was the only place that the servers looked at us cross eyed when we sat down because we had Shane with us. After 15 minutes when they didn't approach us and we realized that we couldn't understand a damn thing on the menu (except that everything was super expensive), so we left. We crossed the street to a Scottish cafe called the Horse Head Tavern. The food and ambiance were exactly what we were looking for and we could read the menu which had English subtitles. It was a perfect meal. Later that night, we just walked around and got ice cream down by Notre Dame and looked at a very cool fountain built in memory of the soldiers who served under Napoleon. (See photo) We walked along The Seine all the way back to our neighborhood. It was one of the most absolutely fabulous days of my life.

Footnote: Bad mommy, I forgot the camera at home this day so we have no photos.
